I lie there long after Avery falls asleep and just look at her. I can’t believe how angry I was, seeing her standing inside the doorway. All the insecurities my father drilled into me about my music came rushing forward like flood water through a broken dam. Here I am, thirty years old, and I’m still letting my father control me, even from the fucking grave. My entire life, he made me feel inadequate. He could never understand why I wasn’t more like him. Analytical instead of creative. Power hungry and driven instead of happy just playing my piano.

Now, it didn’t matter, because the bastard is dead. Thinking of his death makes me think of the darkness only Avery brings out. It’s a craving only she can fill. I see this matching grief inside her and it pulls at the monster. Feeds it. The tenderness comes when it’s been satiated. The music we make together is majestic, and she’s beginning to hear it too.

I slip out from beneath her and pad naked to the music room. I sit at my instrument, close my eyes, and begin to play the song that has been brewing inside my head. The one for her. I play a few chords before stopping and writing down the notes. I lose track of how long I do this, but eventually I make my way up to my room and fall into bed.
